Remembering Shankar Nag
Shankar Nag was born on 9th November 1954 in Mallapur village of Karnataka moved to Mumbai after finishing his education.
Putting together a tribute is not a easy task, because Shankar Nag was visionary in every sense. Shankar will be remembered as a brilliant actor, director and a technician. Shankar Nag along with his brother Ananth Nag moved to Mumbai and joined Marathi theatre, where he met actress Arundhathi in a drama rehearsal and eventually they got married.
Even after establishing himself in the marathi theatre, his heart was in karnataka. Eventually he moved to karnataka and started a amature theatre group "Sanket". He was fluent in Kannada,Marathi,English,Hindi and Konkani languages.
Shankar Nag was instrumental in bringing the R.K.Laxman collection of short stories onto the television. Malgudi Days is still remembered for its directorial acumen. He directed few more serials for DD1-Delhi and DD1-Kannada. I have meet so many people who still love to watch Malgudi Days.
Before shankar nag joined the film industry, most of the technical activities were done with technicians at Chennai. Because of this lot of time and effort was wasted in moving from Bangalore to Chennai. This prompted shankar nag to start dubbing studio(Sanket Electronics) in bangalore. Shankar Nag was a master technican, which we can see in his movies, theater and TV.
Shankar Nag was a brilliant actor and has won national award on debut. His acting career spanned for 12 years(1978-1990). He has acted in more than 90 films. Many of his films have become a big grosser at box office. Auto Raja was still remembered by many people including auto driver's for the portrayal of well educated riding auto rickshaw and showing auto driver's in good image.
Shankar Nag has used music in his films with perfection. He was instrumental in getting Illayaraja compose some of the memorable tunes in the Kannada industry. He even prevailed upon Illayaraja to compose background music in few of the films. In those Illayaraja was regarded was best music director in the south india and was choosy in doing non tamil movies.
Shankar Nag left many unfinished projects like the Country Club at his farm near Bangalore, a ropeway to Nandi Hills and a low cost prefab housing scheme. An admirer of Ramakrishna Hegde, he was not much into active politics. However he had a great vision for Bangalore. Way back in 1990, before his untimely death, he proposed a Metro for Bangalore city, based on what he had seen in London.
There is lot more to write about the man who dreamt for the betterment of film industry and people of Bangalore. He didn't get much credit because of presence of stalwarts like Rajkumar and Vishnuvardhan. But he didn't much more than these people to the film industry.
I feel he is Guru Dutt of Kannada Film. Guru Dutt was also a brilliant actor, director and technician. People didn't understand both Guru Dutt and Shankar Nag because their thinking was way ahead others. People can to know about there importance after their demise. Incidentally both are from Karnataka.
Still lot more to write,a post is just a small tribute to shankar nag.

Dying art of letter writing
World postal day is celebrated on 9th October. I was not even aware such a celebration takes place world wide each year. I came across FM radio news about world postal day while driving to office, that's when i decided to post a blog.
People in India and world over used either horse or foot post, before the modern postal service was established by British East India Company in 1764.
30 years back the most common mode of communication was postal services in the India(other than metro's). People mainly used postal services for business purpose and communicating with people leaving in far of place. People used to wait for a mails and rejoice when received mails from the dear ones. I still remember people (including my grand father and father) used to hang the received mails in one corner of the room. There are many places around the world where postal service in the only mode of communication.
Writing a letter is an art, which was practiced by great people(Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda) to name a few. They used to communicate with the followers through mails. Postal service played a important role in the Indian Independence struggle, but sadly never highlighted in any articles. There are many songs dedicated to the postal services in the Indian films.
Letter writing was taught in the school as the integral part of the course. Competition were conducted on regular basis at all levels(National,State,District). School kids used to practice writing mails religiously.
Writing mails started dwindling with the advances in other modes of communication(computer and mobile phones) which are quicker and easier. The advances in computers and mobiles has changed the way we communicate with people. They use voice calls,SMS, emails, social networking etc. for communication, which are faster and efficient. But this have given rise to more informal way of communicating. Writing emails/sms/tweets are not governed by a set of rules, unlike letter writing.
Young generation doesn't know the importance of the letter writing. Whenever i come across people struggling to write mails, i pity them because they were never taught how to write mails. It is the responsibility of schools and parents to teach their kids the importance and art of letter writing. It is the responsibility of people who have learnt the letter writing skills, should practice and encourage others to follow.
In addition to postal services, the post office provide telephone and telegraph services. Before STD came into existence, people used to make long distance call through trunk call. I remember i used to wait for long hours to make a call (trunk call) to my father from post office. Then STD booth(kiosk) came into existence and the telephone services slowly moved out of the post office.
I end this blog with the hope that art of writing would survive and flourish in coming days.

Unholy nexus of politics and sports
A few decades ago politics and sports were separate entity. Political parties were headed by eminent political leaders and sports body was headed by former players.
Football:
India finished 4th in the football tournament at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, won the 1951 & 1962 Asian Games Gold medal and reached the semi-finals in the next two Asian Games tournaments in what became known as the golden era of Indian football.
Hockey:
India was the first non-European team to be a part of the International Hockey Federation. In 1928, the team won its first Olympic gold medal. From 1928 to 1956, the Indian men's team remained unbeaten in the Olympics, garnering six gold medals in a row. The Indian team has won a total of eight gold, one silver and two bronze medals in Olympics.
Cricket:
I had to lot of research to find the golden age of cricket without any politician/head of state heading the board, but in the end i found that the board is headed by either British or Maharajah of state or political leader. There were very less administrator in between with cricket background. The high point of Indian cricket was wining of world cup in 1983 under kapil dev.
Athletics and other Olympic games:
The history of athletics in India dates back to the Vedic era. Although it is indeed a mystery that when exactly athletics in India made its presence felt as a distinct sports form; however it can be said that the well illustrated values of the Atharva Veda contoured the limn of Indian athletics.
Milkha Singh and P.T.Usha finished fourth in Men's and Women's 400 meters at Olympics. Many Indian Athletes have showed their excellence in various Athletics events in the international level so far. Some of the most successful Athletes in the history of Indian Athletics include Milkha Singh, T. C Yohannan, Gurbachan Singh, Sriram Singh etc. All these athletes are considered as the golden boys in the history of Indian Athletics. Some of the notable Indian Athletes in the contemporary period include P T Usha, Anju Bobby George, Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, Saraswati Saha, Soma Biswas etc.
Other Notable Olympic Events were India faired pretty well:
Kakasahaba Dadasaheb Jadhav won bronze medal in wrestling.
Leander Peas won bronze medal in tennis.
Rajyvardhan Singh Rathore won silver medal in shooting.
Abhinav Bindra won gold in shooting.
Vijendra Singh won bronze medal in boxing.
Sushil Kumar won bronze in wrestling.
Now a days each and every sports body is headed by political leader.
Football:
India was one the leading teams in Asia and the world before political leader started heading the board. Now India has become one of the lowest ranked team in world and as well as Asia. India has won few international tournaments against weaker opposition either at home or in South Asian meets. Other than Biachung Bhutia and Sunil Chetri there are no players who can called of international class. Even these guys are unable to break into third division team in European countries. Successive president of board are either politician or non-football influential person who are least bothered about the development of game, they are interested only in politics and swindling of the money allotted to sports.
Hockey:
India was one the leading teams in Asia and the world before political leader started heading the board. Now India is considered one of the weakest team in world and Asia. The present state of hockey is partially due to K.P.S Gill and previous president's. Mr Gill sacked almost all the team members of Asian gold medal wining team. The gold medal was won after 32 years. The reason was players wanted better pay, playing conditions and say in the selection. Mr Gill wanted to run the hockey as his own private organization. Many great players (Dhanraj Pillay, Mukesh Kumar, Ashish Ballal) retired in his period.
On 9 March 2008, India lost 2-0 to Britain at Santiago, Chile in the final of one of the three qualifying tournaments for the Beijing Olympics. With only the winner advancing to the 12-team event, the Indian men's team was eliminated from the Beijing Olympics competition. This is the first time that the Indian men's team did not participate in the Olympics since 1928.
Cricket:
India was one the leading teams in Asia and the world before political leader started heading the board. After prolonged slump, now India is considered one of the strongest in world and Asia. The present position is due to team and coaching staff, rather than administrator. The board is killing the golden laying egg by playing the national team. The greed of the these non-cricket background people have made cricketers play non-stop round the year and many players have either injured after few series.
Athletics and other Olympic games:
Even after having better facilities than what Milkha Singh or P.T.Usha in their period. India is not able to produce any world class athletes, the only exception is Anju Bobby George. She bronze in world championship. The athletes have achieved very little in Asian Games after political leaders taking over association. Now Indian athletes are considered one of the weakest in Asia. Only few athletes are done notable well in Asia, but that is due their determination and hard work rather the association helping them.
Other Notable Olympic Events were India faired pretty well:
Leander Peas won bronze medal in tennis.
Rajyvardhan Singh Rathore won silver medal in shooting.
Abhinav Bindra won gold in shooting.
Vijendra Singh won bronze medal in boxing.
Sushil Kumar won bronze in wrestling.
The reason behind political leader heading various sports body:
1. Show their power over political rivals.
2. Swindle money.
3. Get media coverage when sports person do well.
4. To be in power even if they lose election in general election.
I hope good will prevail in the coming years over these mindless politician and these people will move to their field and former sports person will head the sports body.

BJP - Disintegration or Reintegration
The recent developments in BJP have prompted many experts and political rivals to write off BJP as one more political party that will disintegrate over a period of time. But they will rise from the ashes in next couple of years.
It is widely believed that BJP is political arm of RSS and is decision making body of BJP.The statement is not completely false, because most of BJP's functionaries are RSS members. Hence if there are any tough decision to be taken, they consult RSS.
From the inception of RSS.RSS believed that people with age less than 60 years should lead the organization. If you look at the past and present chief's of RSS are/were less than 60 years, expect for Prof Rajendra Singh and Shri Kuppahalli Sitaramayya Sudarshan. The present chief of RSS - Dr Mohan Madhukar Bhagwat is less than 60 years. He is around 58 years. Recently Mohan Bhagwat was advocating the people with age more than 60 years should make way for the younger lot in organization. This is not something new which he was advocating, this was being practiced since its inception.
The recent shakeup in BJP is done keeping this mind. The sidelining or removal of senior leaders is to make way for younger lot of people. The most important aspect of the shakeup is timing.
1. Three states are going into general assembly election - Maharashtra,Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh. Expect for Maharashtra,BJP has little or no presence in other two states. Even in Maharashtra they are doing well. Hence the recent shakeup will not have much effect in these elections.
2. The tenure of BJP office bearer's are ending in December. Hence the smooth transfer of roles from senior leaders to younger lot.
3. Preparing for next Lok Sabha much ahead of other political parties.
I end this blog with the hope BJP will come back stronger with the younger intellectual leaders in the coming years.

An Open to remember
Actually i wanted to write last week itself, but i was struck up with other work.
US open 2009 will be remembered for grit of comeback mother, young Turk taking on multiple grand slam winner and of course American Drama Queen. There are many other incidents which happened at this year's open, which i am not going to mention in the post.
Girt of Comeback Mother:
Kim Clijsters of Belgium entered tournament as wild card entrant. US Open was open third tournament after coming out of the retirement. Kim retired in 2007 because of boredom and wanted to start family. After four years she was competing in US Open which she won in 2005. Nobody gave any chance that she eventually win US Open 2009,even Kim was not expecting much from the tournament. She was using these tournaments for preparing for full fledged comeback in next year. She was checking how good she is with the present set of players. She had roller coaster ride getting past Marion Bartoli, Venus Williams and Serena Williams. Serena Williams was defending champion. The semi-final match ended on bitter note with serena williams abusing line umpire over line call and point and match went Kim's way.In final she was against Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.Caroline has very good this year and she was one of the brightest player on the circuit. She was never crossed 4th round in any Grand Slam and here she was in the final of Grand Slam. On the her way to final she had to beat giant killer Oudin of USA. Many was expecting Caroline to win,but she had the last hurdle to cross. The final was one sided and Kim won 7-5 and 6-3. In this process she became first wild card entrant to win US Open. The win should be attributed to Kim's hard work, dedication, family support, grit and no pressure(she was not expecting). The lessons that we learn from her achievement is that:
1. We perform better when not under pressure.
2. Talent will never go waste.
3. Hard work and Dedication will never go waste.
4. Do not worry about results.
5. Family support is must to be successful.
6. Never say die attitude.
7. Live your dreams (Even it means go to any distant).
Young Turk vs Multiple Grand Slam Winner:
Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina had a wonderful year. He was quarter-finalist at Australian Open and semi-finalist at French Open. In final he was against five time champion and World No.1 Roger Federer. Juan was pitted as Rafeel Nadal in semi final.Everybody was expecting to see Nadal and Federer fight out for another epic final, but destiny had other plans for Juan.In lopsided match Juan beat Nadal in straight sets. Roger was eying for 16th Grand Slam and sixth straight US Open and Juan was in Grand Slam final for the first time.Roger was not able to extend his collection of Grand Slam titles to 16 and sixth straight grand slam at US Open(In open era only Ivan Lendle had six straight US open grand slam). He was defeated by Juan Martin Del Potro in the epic final of the U.S. Open 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-7(5), 2-6 which last for four hours. In the process he became second Argentina to win US Open in open era. He became to first man to beat Rafeel Nadal and Roger Federer in Grand Slam. I think he is sixth youngest to win (If i am wrong, please correct me).
The lessons that we learn from his achievement is that:
1. We perform better when not under pressure.
2. Hard work and Dedication will never go waste.
3. Do not worry about results.
4. Never get unfazed or intimated by opposition.
5. Holding nerves in tough situation.
6. Making full use of opportunity.
American Drama Queen:
Intially i didn't wanted to add this event in the post, but i wanted to showcase the unruly behaviour of the players on the circuit. Serena Williams is undoubtedly drama queen of the present set of players. She has doing these drama's in many events. The latest is US Open semi final match against Kim Clijsters. Serena was defending champion and she was expected to march to final with the kind of tennis she playing over the weeks, but she was against determined Kim. Serena was playing hopeless bad in the first set, she lost the set and her cool. She was handed code violation for racket abuse at the end of the first set. In second set serena was trailing 5-6 and was serving to save set and championship. Serena was trailing 15-30,when all the hell broke down. Lines woman(Asian origin) called serena for foot fault and this infuriated serena.Serena started moving aggressively towards lines woman and began yelling at her. Chair umpire called on lines woman for explanation. The verbal abuse didn't stop even after chair umpire intervening. This prompted chair umpire to call on match referee, the verbal abuse was going on. Serena was penalized for the second code violation of the match and the match awarded to Kim.Serena was not even apologetic above the events and even went on the defend her behaviour. This reminds us days of John McEnroe when he was abusing judges, when ever the verdict was against him. I feel should not allowed to play in circuit, until they are rehabilitate. They should be debarred from playing and coaching if they repeat the mistakes again.
The lessons that we learn from this is:
1. Blame others for your failure.
2. Scant respect for Judges,Asian origins and public.
3. Never take failure in their stride.
4. Showing aggression when situation is out control (These people want to show that they are strong and aggressive. The want to change results with sheer strength and aggression).
5. Respect for opposition.
Other News:
1. Leander Peas and Lucas Dulohy won Men's Doubles beating Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles. It was proud moment for India as both winner and runner up were Indians.
2. Marat Safin of Russia was playing last Grand Slam, before retiring.
If any one feels to add/remove the above points, please leave comments.

Hyderabad Karnataka Liberation Day
This post in one of the nearest to my heart as i belong Hyderabad Karnataka Region and its gives immense please to share few facts about Hyderabad Karnataka Region.
Historical Background:
While Karnataka became independent with the rest of the country on the 15th of August, 1947, the story was a little different in some parts of the state that were under the rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad. Hyderabad consisted of large portions of what were later to be the north eastern districts of Bidar, Gulbarga and Raichur of Karnataka state. The lingayat minority in these regions also nursed the grouse that they had been neglected and resented the oppression of the Nizam and the Razakars. The Nizam refused to accede to India until his rule got overthrown by force. Following the 'police action' against the Nizam, Hyderabad province and its citizens became independent on 17 September 1948. This day is celebrated by the Karnataka government as the Hyderabad-Karnataka liberation day.
The architect of this liberation was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who liberated this region from Nizam of Hyderabad. To respect the duty of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel a statue has been installed in Timmapuri Chowk(circle) at Gulbarga, and subsequently the circle is named after him now. Now it is called as sardar patel chowk. This chowk is strategically located near Bus stand,Railway station and Mini Vidhana Soudha.
The Hyderabad Karnataka area is now has 4 districts named Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur and Koppal. Recently Govt of Karnataka has announced Yadgir as a District which is now a part of Gulbarga District.
Mr Basavaraj Koppal has compiled the liberation in detail in the following links:
1. Hyderabad Karnataka Liberation 1
2. Hyderabad Karnataka Liberation 2
3. Hyderabad Karnataka Liberation 3
4. Hyderabad Karnataka Liberation 4

6. Hyderabad Karnataka Liberation 6

Present Day Hyderabad Karnataka Region:
Even after its liberation from Nizam's 61 years back ,the present day Hyderabad Karnataka(HK) region gives a dismal picture in socio-economic scenario. There were many chief ministers, state ministers and union ministers from HK region, but the development of the region was neglected. According my father, the best chief minister that karnataka had is J.H.Patel. He belongs to HK region.During his period there was rapid growth in these districts compared to other tenures, but the pace couldn't be sustained after his defeat in polls. Many people dont agree with my father as J.H.Patel was more famous for being alcoholic and womaniser, but the fact is that he was good administrator. Raichur and Bellary are bordered by Andhra Pradesh, whereas Bidar and Gulburga are bordered by both Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. A high power committee was setup to study Regional Imbalances under Late D.M.Dr Nanjundappa was submitted to the State Government in 2002, no serious effort had been made to implement the recommendations of the committee to find a permanent solution to the problem of inequality in development.
These districts are considered most backward districts in karnataka state.
1. The literacy rate is very low.
2. Education Infrastructure is bad
3. Per capita income is very low.
4. No or less industrialization.
5. Less rainfall. Crops are dependent on the rainfall.
6. Lack of basic amenities in towns and villages.
Brighter side: Other than historical significance
1. Raichur and Bellary have thermal power plants, which provide more than 20% of power generation of state. Raichur alone generates 2100 MW of power. Bellary is known for mining.
2. Bidar has a Indian Air Force base.
3. Gulburga has huge limestone reserve and many cement factories around. Gulburga University is located in Gulburga.

Process - Engineer's Perspective
This is continuation of yesterday's post.
Every religion or creed have a set of process to follow,to be in society. As i said in previous post, process are being followed from centuries. Many of the process that we are following were there from centuries,we are just re-searching and restructuring those process and putting them together and make it presentable and acceptable to the present world.
Processes are bane to engineering field, because most of the time, people would be practicing and implementing these process, instead of doing engineering activity. I feel implementation of the process should be handled by non-engineering people and engineer's should do engineering activity. But in most of the organization's engineer's are implementing the process in addition to engineering activity and non-engineering people are involved in defining process and inspecting the process are followed in organization.
Most of the product based companies follow less of process and whereas services based companies follow very stringent processes. Take the case of Product companies(Intel,Qualcomm,Broadcom,TI etc)and Services companies(Infosys,TCS,Wipro,Sasken etc. Product companies are putting more emphasis on product development and less on the process and they are doing well. Where as services companies are putting more emphasis on process and less on development for obvious reason, since the product's are developed and many service companies are vying for the feature enhancement, maintenance and support of these products. So to have one up-man ship the services companies tend to improve process.
For successful completion of development lifecycle we need right process. Process should not be hindrance to development lifecycle, instead it should compliment.
Whether we like or dislike processes,we live in such a society, where have to follow process.

09/09/09
I was unaware of today date, until i wrote a cheque. It's 09/09/09. I don't know if there is any significance of this day, other than coming once in a century.
Since the day i started working, the hear word process very often in each and every organization. I am not firm believer of process, but the fact is that we have to follow process because of industry compulsion. There are hundreds of thousands of process in the world and each has its own significance in there own sense. Each year we find new process coming out in the industry and life cycle of the process is short lived.Because of greed(Make more profit) or for constant improvement or to have up hand in clinching business we introduce new process. I really don't know is it worth it.Many people think otherwise.
I have been undergoing six sigma green belt training for the sake of attending it as i don't know have any active project. As the presenter started talking about six sigma, I realized the process were there from the centuries. The process are nothing but a set of rules/guidelines to follow. The fact is that whenever a certain process is laid out to perform a job,we human beings tend to break or not adhere to the process.
Will update the post tomorrow as i have to hit bed.
