Actually i wanted to write last week itself, but i was struck up with other work.
US open 2009 will be remembered for grit of comeback mother, young Turk taking on multiple grand slam winner and of course American Drama Queen. There are many other incidents which happened at this year's open, which i am not going to mention in the post.
Girt of Comeback Mother:
Kim Clijsters of Belgium entered tournament as wild card entrant. US Open was open third tournament after coming out of the retirement. Kim retired in 2007 because of boredom and wanted to start family. After four years she was competing in US Open which she won in 2005. Nobody gave any chance that she eventually win US Open 2009,even Kim was not expecting much from the tournament. She was using these tournaments for preparing for full fledged comeback in next year. She was checking how good she is with the present set of players. She had roller coaster ride getting past Marion Bartoli, Venus Williams and Serena Williams. Serena Williams was defending champion. The semi-final match ended on bitter note with serena williams abusing line umpire over line call and point and match went Kim's way.In final she was against Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.Caroline has very good this year and she was one of the brightest player on the circuit. She was never crossed 4th round in any Grand Slam and here she was in the final of Grand Slam. On the her way to final she had to beat giant killer Oudin of USA. Many was expecting Caroline to win,but she had the last hurdle to cross. The final was one sided and Kim won 7-5 and 6-3. In this process she became first wild card entrant to win US Open. The win should be attributed to Kim's hard work, dedication, family support, grit and no pressure(she was not expecting). The lessons that we learn from her achievement is that:
1. We perform better when not under pressure.
2. Talent will never go waste.
3. Hard work and Dedication will never go waste.
4. Do not worry about results.
5. Family support is must to be successful.
6. Never say die attitude.
7. Live your dreams (Even it means go to any distant).
Young Turk vs Multiple Grand Slam Winner:
Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina had a wonderful year. He was quarter-finalist at Australian Open and semi-finalist at French Open. In final he was against five time champion and World No.1 Roger Federer. Juan was pitted as Rafeel Nadal in semi final.Everybody was expecting to see Nadal and Federer fight out for another epic final, but destiny had other plans for Juan.In lopsided match Juan beat Nadal in straight sets. Roger was eying for 16th Grand Slam and sixth straight US Open and Juan was in Grand Slam final for the first time.Roger was not able to extend his collection of Grand Slam titles to 16 and sixth straight grand slam at US Open(In open era only Ivan Lendle had six straight US open grand slam). He was defeated by Juan Martin Del Potro in the epic final of the U.S. Open 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-7(5), 2-6 which last for four hours. In the process he became second Argentina to win US Open in open era. He became to first man to beat Rafeel Nadal and Roger Federer in Grand Slam. I think he is sixth youngest to win (If i am wrong, please correct me).
The lessons that we learn from his achievement is that:
1. We perform better when not under pressure.
2. Hard work and Dedication will never go waste.
3. Do not worry about results.
4. Never get unfazed or intimated by opposition.
5. Holding nerves in tough situation.
6. Making full use of opportunity.
American Drama Queen:
Intially i didn't wanted to add this event in the post, but i wanted to showcase the unruly behaviour of the players on the circuit. Serena Williams is undoubtedly drama queen of the present set of players. She has doing these drama's in many events. The latest is US Open semi final match against Kim Clijsters. Serena was defending champion and she was expected to march to final with the kind of tennis she playing over the weeks, but she was against determined Kim. Serena was playing hopeless bad in the first set, she lost the set and her cool. She was handed code violation for racket abuse at the end of the first set. In second set serena was trailing 5-6 and was serving to save set and championship. Serena was trailing 15-30,when all the hell broke down. Lines woman(Asian origin) called serena for foot fault and this infuriated serena.Serena started moving aggressively towards lines woman and began yelling at her. Chair umpire called on lines woman for explanation. The verbal abuse didn't stop even after chair umpire intervening. This prompted chair umpire to call on match referee, the verbal abuse was going on. Serena was penalized for the second code violation of the match and the match awarded to Kim.Serena was not even apologetic above the events and even went on the defend her behaviour. This reminds us days of John McEnroe when he was abusing judges, when ever the verdict was against him. I feel should not allowed to play in circuit, until they are rehabilitate. They should be debarred from playing and coaching if they repeat the mistakes again.
The lessons that we learn from this is:
1. Blame others for your failure.
2. Scant respect for Judges,Asian origins and public.
3. Never take failure in their stride.
4. Showing aggression when situation is out control (These people want to show that they are strong and aggressive. The want to change results with sheer strength and aggression).
5. Respect for opposition.
Other News:
1. Leander Peas and Lucas Dulohy won Men's Doubles beating Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles. It was proud moment for India as both winner and runner up were Indians.
2. Marat Safin of Russia was playing last Grand Slam, before retiring.
If any one feels to add/remove the above points, please leave comments.
