Process - Engineer's Perspective

This is continuation of yesterday's post.

Every religion or creed have a set of process to follow,to be in society. As i said in previous post, process are being followed from centuries. Many of the process that we are following were there from centuries,we are just re-searching and restructuring those process and putting them together and make it presentable and acceptable to the present world.

Processes are bane to engineering field, because most of the time, people would be practicing and implementing these process, instead of doing engineering activity. I feel implementation of the process should be handled by non-engineering people and engineer's should do engineering activity. But in most of the organization's engineer's are implementing the process in addition to engineering activity and non-engineering people are involved in defining process and inspecting the process are followed in organization.

Most of the product based companies follow less of process and whereas services based companies follow very stringent processes. Take the case of Product companies(Intel,Qualcomm,Broadcom,TI etc)and Services companies(Infosys,TCS,Wipro,Sasken etc. Product companies are putting more emphasis on product development and less on the process and they are doing well. Where as services companies are putting more emphasis on process and less on development for obvious reason, since the product's are developed and many service companies are vying for the feature enhancement, maintenance and support of these products. So to have one up-man ship the services companies tend to improve process.

For successful completion of development lifecycle we need right process. Process should not be hindrance to development lifecycle, instead it should compliment.

Whether we like or dislike processes,we live in such a society, where have to follow process.
