A few decades ago politics and sports were separate entity. Political parties were headed by eminent political leaders and sports body was headed by former players.
Football:
India finished 4th in the football tournament at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, won the 1951 & 1962 Asian Games Gold medal and reached the semi-finals in the next two Asian Games tournaments in what became known as the golden era of Indian football.
Hockey:
India was the first non-European team to be a part of the International Hockey Federation. In 1928, the team won its first Olympic gold medal. From 1928 to 1956, the Indian men's team remained unbeaten in the Olympics, garnering six gold medals in a row. The Indian team has won a total of eight gold, one silver and two bronze medals in Olympics.
Cricket:
I had to lot of research to find the golden age of cricket without any politician/head of state heading the board, but in the end i found that the board is headed by either British or Maharajah of state or political leader. There were very less administrator in between with cricket background. The high point of Indian cricket was wining of world cup in 1983 under kapil dev.
Athletics and other Olympic games:
The history of athletics in India dates back to the Vedic era. Although it is indeed a mystery that when exactly athletics in India made its presence felt as a distinct sports form; however it can be said that the well illustrated values of the Atharva Veda contoured the limn of Indian athletics.
Milkha Singh and P.T.Usha finished fourth in Men's and Women's 400 meters at Olympics. Many Indian Athletes have showed their excellence in various Athletics events in the international level so far. Some of the most successful Athletes in the history of Indian Athletics include Milkha Singh, T. C Yohannan, Gurbachan Singh, Sriram Singh etc. All these athletes are considered as the golden boys in the history of Indian Athletics. Some of the notable Indian Athletes in the contemporary period include P T Usha, Anju Bobby George, Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, Saraswati Saha, Soma Biswas etc.
Other Notable Olympic Events were India faired pretty well:
Kakasahaba Dadasaheb Jadhav won bronze medal in wrestling.
Leander Peas won bronze medal in tennis.
Rajyvardhan Singh Rathore won silver medal in shooting.
Abhinav Bindra won gold in shooting.
Vijendra Singh won bronze medal in boxing.
Sushil Kumar won bronze in wrestling.
Now a days each and every sports body is headed by political leader.
Football:
India was one the leading teams in Asia and the world before political leader started heading the board. Now India has become one of the lowest ranked team in world and as well as Asia. India has won few international tournaments against weaker opposition either at home or in South Asian meets. Other than Biachung Bhutia and Sunil Chetri there are no players who can called of international class. Even these guys are unable to break into third division team in European countries. Successive president of board are either politician or non-football influential person who are least bothered about the development of game, they are interested only in politics and swindling of the money allotted to sports.
Hockey:
India was one the leading teams in Asia and the world before political leader started heading the board. Now India is considered one of the weakest team in world and Asia. The present state of hockey is partially due to K.P.S Gill and previous president's. Mr Gill sacked almost all the team members of Asian gold medal wining team. The gold medal was won after 32 years. The reason was players wanted better pay, playing conditions and say in the selection. Mr Gill wanted to run the hockey as his own private organization. Many great players (Dhanraj Pillay, Mukesh Kumar, Ashish Ballal) retired in his period.
On 9 March 2008, India lost 2-0 to Britain at Santiago, Chile in the final of one of the three qualifying tournaments for the Beijing Olympics. With only the winner advancing to the 12-team event, the Indian men's team was eliminated from the Beijing Olympics competition. This is the first time that the Indian men's team did not participate in the Olympics since 1928.
Cricket:
India was one the leading teams in Asia and the world before political leader started heading the board. After prolonged slump, now India is considered one of the strongest in world and Asia. The present position is due to team and coaching staff, rather than administrator. The board is killing the golden laying egg by playing the national team. The greed of the these non-cricket background people have made cricketers play non-stop round the year and many players have either injured after few series.
Athletics and other Olympic games:
Even after having better facilities than what Milkha Singh or P.T.Usha in their period. India is not able to produce any world class athletes, the only exception is Anju Bobby George. She bronze in world championship. The athletes have achieved very little in Asian Games after political leaders taking over association. Now Indian athletes are considered one of the weakest in Asia. Only few athletes are done notable well in Asia, but that is due their determination and hard work rather the association helping them.
Other Notable Olympic Events were India faired pretty well:
Leander Peas won bronze medal in tennis.
Rajyvardhan Singh Rathore won silver medal in shooting.
Abhinav Bindra won gold in shooting.
Vijendra Singh won bronze medal in boxing.
Sushil Kumar won bronze in wrestling.
The reason behind political leader heading various sports body:
1. Show their power over political rivals.
2. Swindle money.
3. Get media coverage when sports person do well.
4. To be in power even if they lose election in general election.
I hope good will prevail in the coming years over these mindless politician and these people will move to their field and former sports person will head the sports body.
